About Me

I am a multimedia designer based in western Michigan with extensive experience in print and web design, photography, and videography. I take a very detail-oriented approach to my work, cross-utilizing my skills and talents to create visually engaging designs that maintain a consistent look and feel across all different formats.

I like to create designs and layouts that are simple, efficient, and straightforward, with clear hierarchy and strong branding structure. I believe that strong, quality design isn't as much about being fancy or flashy as it is about being clean and consistent in every application.

I also have a very strong focus on typography and tend to be very picky about typeface selection and typesetting because more often than not, typeface selection is what can make or break a quality design — so it's not uncommon for me to spend just as much time searching for the perfect font family for a project as I spend designing the project at hand.

While print design is my favorite realm of design to work in, I also have a lot of experience with WordPress-based web design, customizing various themes and tweaking page layouts to create the same kind of branding consistency online as in print.

It's important to note that I don't consider myself a web developer by trade — the best way to describe my proficiency with the coding end of web design is that it's more or less equivalent to my ability to perform maintenance on my own car: I know how to change my oil and fix my brakes, and I can diagnose and fix other minor mechanical issues, but I still have to take it to a shop if it needs engine or transmission work.

In other words, I'm proficient enough with HTML, CSS, and other coding to be able to make a lot of visual adjustments and diagnose minor technical issues, but there are a lot of things on the deeper end of the coding spectrum that are beyond my skillset but have enough knowledge about that I can accurately communicate with a developer so they can take care of it.

I also have over 15 years of experience as a hobbyist photographer, which often comes in handy when I'm working on projects that involve photos because I can frame my shots in such a way that anticipates the size, crop, and layout needs of that project without having to do a whole lot of extensive cropping and editing.

My photography skills have also extended themselves into video recording and editing, where I have a very strong eye for timing and pacing, editing shots in ways that make the most impact for the intended message.

Along with my creative skills, I am also adept at a variety of other tangential non-creative technical tasks, including things like managing automated email campaigns on a variety of platforms, social media management and automation, document automation and generation, data entry and organization, and making spreadsheets do things that spreadsheets should never be allowed to do.

Outside of work, one of my biggest hobbies and pastimes is enjoying live music and supporting the talented individuals making names for themselves in West Michigan's thriving local music scene, taking pictures at shows and offering my creative services for show fliers and promotional materials.

I have also been involved with the Boy Scouts of America since my youth, earning my Eagle Scout award in 2002 and remaining involved ever since as an adult volunteer leader with a local troop, mentoring our youth to become strong leaders of character.

I thrive in working both independently and in team-oriented, collaborative environments, and I have a broad range of creative and technical problem solving skills with a keen eye for simplicity and efficiency that make me a skilled utility player for any creative team's roster.
